Get ready for a classic Southern Oregon hike with a bit of a challenge and a huge payoff. The trail to Pilot Rock starts as a pleasant walk through the woods before a series of switchbacks gets your heart pumping. The real adventure begins at the base of the rock, where a thrilling scramble awaits to take you to the top for some of the best 360-degree views around, stretching all the way to Mount Shasta on a clear day. The main hike to the base is about a 45-minute to an hour-long journey from the parking lot.
While not classified as a technical climb, this scramble has substantial exposure while ascending. Use your best judgement, wear solid footwear, do not attempt alone, and follow all safety guidelines when climbing to the top. For those not comfortable with the scramble, explore the base of Pilot Rock and the gorgeous views that abound. In addition, your hike can be extended by taking the Pacific Crest Trail which is located directly off Pilot Rock Trail.
