North Beach at Fort De Soto is one of my go-to spots for a classic Florida beach day. It’s known for its wide stretches of soft sand, super shallow water that’s calm and clear, and some seriously underrated shelling, especially after storms roll through. It’s a favorite for families with little kids and anyone craving a laid-back beach.

The water is perfect for wading or floating, not surfing — and it’s shallow far out, which makes it ideal for little ones or just relaxing without fighting waves. Birdwatchers will love it too — this area is part of the Great Florida Birding Trail, and you can often spot herons, oystercatchers, and even roseate spoonbills.

A few things to know before you go:

  • Arrive early, especially on weekends — it’s popular and parking fills fast

  • There’s a $5 vehicle entrance fee (cash or card)

  • You’ll find restrooms, picnic shelters, and rinse-off showers nearby

  • Pack your own shade and water — there’s little natural cover, and the sun here gets strong

  • The nearby Fort ruins are fun to explore, especially if you’re traveling with kids or into history

If you’re into long beach walks, quiet time, and a more natural vibe, North Beach at Fort De Soto delivers without the big crowds or party atmosphere. It’s one of those places where you can fully unplug and just enjoy.
