If you’re in Key West and want that Dry Tortugas vibe without the ferry or flight, head to Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park Beach. It’s one of the best beaches on the island for snorkeling, with clear water, coral, and fish right off the shore.
The beach is a mix of sand and rock, so it’s not ideal for little kids who want to dig and play, but it’s perfect if you’re there to swim or explore underwater. Bring your own snorkel gear, and get there early — parking is limited, and the park can fill up quickly on weekends and holidays.
There’s a small entrance fee, and inside you’ll find restrooms, shaded picnic areas, and usually a food truck or two. Lifeguards aren’t always on duty, so keep an eye on conditions and your crew.
After the beach, take some time to explore the Civil War–era fort — it’s well preserved, easy to walk through, and adds a unique twist to the visit. Stick around for sunset if you can — it’s one of the best on the island.
