A Walk Through Marble Canyon

BETTER THAN JOHSTON CANYON. Yes, I said it. :)

Just a short drive from the Banff–BC border, you’ll find one of my favourite quick stops in the area: Marble Canyon in Kootenay National Park. This easy, family-friendly walk takes you over a series of footbridges with incredible views down into the narrow canyon carved by the bright turquoise waters of Tokumm Creek.

The trail is only about 1.6 km round trip, starting right from the parking lot, and it ends with a powerful waterfall rushing through the canyon. It’s one of those spots where you don’t have to hike far to get some really dramatic scenery.

What I love about Marble Canyon is that it’s great year-round. In the summer you get the vibrant blue water rushing through the gorge, and in the winter the canyon turns into a frozen wonderland with huge ice formations. It’s also a fantastic alternative to Johnston Canyon, especially if you want something similar but with far fewer crowds.

Since it’s right on the road into Kootenay National Park, it’s also the perfect stop on a bigger day exploring the area. From here you’re close to classic hikes like Stanley Glacier and Floe Lake, making it an easy place to stretch your legs before continuing deeper into the park.
