Mount Maunganui in Tauranga, known locally as Mauao, is a coastal volcanic cone with strong cultural significance to Māori, who regard it as a sacred landmark. It rises directly beside the ocean, creating a unique mix of mountain views and beach scenery.
The summit walk takes about 30 to 45 minutes up via a well maintained but steep track, making it a short, moderately challenging hike. There’s also an easier flat path around the base. At the top, you get panoramic views over the coastline and town, making it one of the most rewarding quick hikes in New Zealand.
