Lake Hāwea is a small glacial lake with a compact township, so think practical: the village has a boat ramp and a couple of cafes and shops, but you should stock up in Wanaka first because it is the nearest larger town about a 20 minute drive away. The water is cold and can get windy in the afternoon, so wear layers, bring a life jacket for any boating or kayaking, and expect strong sun exposure even when it feels cool. If you plan to fish, get a permit, and if you want to camp or stay in the busy summer season, book ahead as holiday parks and small campgrounds fill up. Trails around the lake are short and accessible, and the area makes a great base for nearby skiing in winter or more ambitious hikes and scenic drives in summer.
