Abraham Lake is famous for its winter ice bubbles, a natural phenomenon in which trapped methane gas creates stunning frozen patterns beneath the lake’s surface. In the colder months, these bubbles are a photographer’s dream. Most photographs are taken around "Preachers Point" near the lake's western end.

The bubbles are typically best from January to March. Thanks to the lake's strong winds, the surface is snow-free. This makes it very cold, so bundle up. It's also a good idea to bring traction devices for your boots and an ice screw to check the depth. You can also book a tour.

The area also offers great camping opportunities in the summer, with plenty of scenic, unserviced spots along the shore. It’s quite a drive from the typical Rockies itinerary, so it’s not for everyone. But if you’re up for the extra effort, Abraham Lake is a worthwhile detour, offering a more rugged and off-the-beaten-path experience.
