Svartifoss, meaning "Black Waterfall", is a unique and breathtaking waterfall located in Skaftafell, Iceland. Surrounded by dark hexagonal basalt columns that form through the slow cooling of thick lava flows, Svartifoss is one of the country's most popular waterfalls and a popular destination for hikers of all skill levels. The hike to the falls is an hour and a half round trip and offers stunning views of the surrounding area.

QUICK NOTES:

  • What it is: A pretty little waterfall surrounded by basalt columns.

  • Best season: Summer/fall (but all seasons work).

  • Best time of day: Any (but it is in the shade during early sunrise and late sunset).

  • Nice to know: The hike takes around 30-45 minutes one way. Please don't go past the designated viewing platforms since it will ruin the view for the rest of the people there.
