Álftaversgígar is a cool spot in South Iceland with some seriously interesting geological history. These rootless cones, or pseudocraters, were formed by lava flowing over wetlands back in the 10th century. You can take an easy hike to check them out and learn more about their story at Dýralækjasker geosite. Plus, there's a historic church site nearby at Þykkvabæjarklaustur.

QUICK NOTES:

  • What it is: Pseudocraters in south Iceland - if you're into geology then this is a spot for you!

  • Best season: Any.

  • Best time of day: Any but sunset and sunrise for the best contrast.

  • Nice to know: You can see them from a designated viewpoint but it's definitely the most impressive with a drone.
