Caerlaverock Castle is an iconic Scottish castle located 11 kilometers south of Dumfries. It is a 13th century triangular-shaped castle that has been rebuilt multiple times due to its turbulent history, including several sieges.

The castle is very close to where you park so it's easy to access.

Some history:

The castle was originally built in the 1200's as part of King Alexander II's strategy to protect from English invasion. In the 16th century, the Maxwell family were staunchly Catholic supporters of Mary, Queen of Scots. As a result, Caerlaverock Castle underwent partial destruction by English Protestants led by Earl of Sussex. Nonetheless, they remained loyal to her and rebuilt. In the 17th century, the Maxwell family were created Earls of Nithsdale and constructed the impressive lodging within the walls - one of the most ambitious early classical domestic architecture in Scotland. Finally in 1640, the Protestant Covenant Army besieged the castle and abandoned it afterwards. Nowadays, the castle is owned by Historic Environment Scotland.
