If there’s one spot on Vancouver Island that truly feels otherworldly, it’s Mystic Beach. We love to come here and check out the waterfall falling onto the beach. Along the rugged coastline of the Juan de Fuca Trail, this hidden gem is a must-see for anyone craving wild beauty, crashing waves, and that deep sense of West Coast salty magic.

Located about 1.5 hours west of Victoria (near China Beach), Mystic Beach is reached by a 2 km trail through lush rainforest, suspended bridges, and moss-covered trees. The trail is part of the larger 47 km Juan de Fuca Marine Trail (permit required), but many visitors hike just this section for a half-day adventure (no permit required.

When you step out of the forest and onto the sand, you’ll instantly understand the name. The beach opens to a wide stretch of golden sand framed by towering cliffs and sea caves. A small waterfall spills over the rock face right onto the beach—one of the most photographed spots on the South Island.

  • Hike the Trail: 4 km round-trip (moderate difficulty; roots and mud common)

  • Beach picnic: Pack lunch and a blanket for a relaxed afternoon

  • Photography: The waterfall, sea stacks, and driftwood make for incredible photos

  • Camping: There’s a rustic backcountry campsite right on the beach (first-come, first-served)

  • Tide pooling: During low tide, explore tiny marine ecosystems along the rocks

  • Surfing - Sit back and watch the surfers, or if you're experienced and have your board, it’s amazing!

Trail Info & Tips:

  • Distance: 2 km one way

  • Time: 45 minutes down, 1 hour back up (steep in areas)

  • Trailhead: Juan de Fuca Trailhead – China Beach parking lot

  • Facilities: Pit toilets, parking, and an information kiosk at the trailhead

  • Footwear: Wear waterproof hiking shoes — it’s often muddy year-round

  • Best to visit at low tide. Make sure to check the tides before going to most beaches on the Island.

  • Dogs: Allowed on leash

Visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon for fewer crowds. The trail can get busy in summer, especially on weekends.
