Kanku–Breakaways Conservation Park is located just 30 minutes south of Coober Pedy and is a must-visit when traveling through this part of the outback.

We've visited more than five times, and each trip still feels fresh—there are so many scenic spots offering breathtaking views of the colourful desert landscape. The best way to experience the Breakaways is to first head to the main lookout, where you're greeted with sweeping views over the striking, layered escarpments that seem to stretch endlessly into the horizon.

From there, we love to take a slow drive deeper into the park, toward the Dog Fence, one of the longest structures in the world. Along the way, you’ll find yourself completely immersed in the dramatic colours and formations of the landscape—deep reds, soft whites, and rich ochres that change with the light throughout the day. It's a peaceful and powerful place that really captures the unique spirit of the South Australian outback.
