Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is a remote, uniquely Sonoran Desert place where you go to see dense stands of organ pipe cactus, scenic gravel drives and short hikes, so plan like you are headed into the backcountry: bring lots of water, sun protection, a full spare tire and basic repair tools, and expect little to no cell service. Visit between late fall and spring for comfortable temperatures and better hiking, and avoid summer when daytime heat is extreme. The Ajo Mountain Drive is the main scenic route; it is unpaved and can be rough after rain, so a high clearance vehicle helps, though many people in dry weather manage in ordinary cars. Services are limited to nearby towns, rangers and Border Patrol are active near the international boundary, and you should stay on marked roads and trails. Check the National Park Service site before you go for current road and safety alerts, then enjoy close-up views of cacti and desert wildlife at sunrise or sunset when the light is best.
