Tonto National Monument is a compact but rewarding spot where you can see Salado cliff dwellings sitting above Roosevelt Lake, so come prepared for a short, focused visit. The Lower Cliff Dwelling is reachable from the visitor center via a brief paved trail and can be seen without a guide; the Upper Cliff Dwelling involves a steep, seasonal route or ranger-led tours, so check hours and tour availability before you go. Bring plenty of water, sun protection, and sturdy shoes because shade and services are limited, especially in summer, and cell service can be spotty. Expect to spend about an hour or two, respect the fragile ruins by not touching or climbing on them, and try to visit in the cooler morning or late afternoon for the best comfort and light.
