One of the most popular short hikes in the Superstition Mountains, the Wave Cave Trail leads to a dramatic rock alcove where a wave-shaped rock formation frames sweeping desert views. The trail begins gently on desert flats but becomes increasingly rocky and steep as it climbs toward the cave, with loose gravel, stone steps, and some mild scrambling.
At the cave, a smooth, curving rock shelf creates the famous “wave” appearance — a perfect sunrise or sunset photo spot with broad views over the valley and surrounding peaks.
➡️ Expect a steep final climb with loose footing and short scramble sections. The cave floor can be slick.
➡️ Entire trail is exposed — start early and bring more water than you think you need, especially in warmer months.
