Cong Abbey, also known as the Royal Abbey of Cong, is a historic site located in County Mayo. Founded in the 7th century by Saint Feichin, the abbey was later rebuilt and expanded by High King Turlough Mor O'Connor. It features impressive examples of early Gothic architecture and includes a monks' fishing house on an island in the River Cong. Today, the ruins of Cong Abbey are a national monument under the care of the Commissioners for Public Works. Cong is absolutely charming and was also the setting for the film "The Quiet Man". There are many reasons to make a stop in this wonderful village!
