A bucketlist spot ✨
While I didn't make my way to this incredible location due to time constraints, it is most certainly on my bucketlist. I have spent quite a bit of time researching and consolidated some information for you 👇🏻
Halibut Cove is a cute little spot off Kachemak Bay, nestled right by the water. It is a tiny island community of artists, craftspeople, and anglers. The area is mostly accessible by boat or floatplane, giving it that remote, untouched vibe that many travelers crave.
From the Travel Alaska Website, to get to Halibut Cove, you can take one of the ferry services that cruise daily from the Homer Spit. Along the way, ferries swing past Gull Island, home to some 16,000 nesting seabirds including puffins, kittiwakes, murres, and cormorants, and boat operators offer tours of the island for those interested in birding. Scheduled ferry departures leave plenty of time to explore the art galleries that display painting, pottery, and sculpture from more than a dozen local artists, or to dine at an excellent restaurant featuring fresh-caught seafood.
The most popular attraction of Kachemak Bay State Park is Grewingk Glacier, with the trailhead to the glacier accessible via a short boat ride from Halibut Cove or Homer. Hiking out to view the glacier is a popular activity that involves an easy one-way hike of 3.5 miles on the Glacier Lake Trail, or a longer 6.7 miles on the Blue Ice Trail for views overlooking the glacier.
Here are some things to do in the area:
Grewignk Glacier & Glacier Lake (3-mile round-trip hike)
Kachemak Bay State Park
Kayaking
Book a local water taxi for a sightseeing tour
Visit the floating post office
Visit a floating oyster farm
A couple of Notes for your visit:
You may want to consider bringing your groceries with you from Homer
The primary mode of transportation within the cove is by foot, skiff or ATV.
