If you’re in Taupo, definitely check out Aratiatia Rapids, it's a stunning spot and bonus, there is a free freedom campsite at the carpark. First thing to note is that the rapids only happen when they release water from the Aratiatia Dam, which happens at 10 am, 12 pm, and 2 pm. So, plan your visit around those times for the full effect. Once the water is released, a dramatic surge of water flows through the gorge, and it's awesome to see how quickly the river rises and crashes over the rocks.
There are three viewing platforms to check out the rapids. The first two are on either side of the road and the bridge the water flows under. One platform lets you watch the dam gates open, and the other gives you a view of the turquoise pool filling up, turning into a blue gatorade slushy. The third platform is a short 5-minute walk away, and it was my favourite, it feels the most naturally beautiful. Just a heads-up, the water is only released for about 15 minutes during each time slot, so once you've seen the rapids at one platform, hustle over to the next to make sure you don’t miss the show. It’s a pretty spectacular, free showcase of the raw power of water.
