Peñón de Ifach is that towering limestone landmark you spot from miles away. It dominates Calpe’s skyline and draws you in like a natural magnet. Rising about 332 meters straight up from the coast, it’s part hiking trail, part cliff-adventure and totally worth the effort for the views. Ifach has a hiking route known as the “Red Route” of the Natural Park, which starts from the visitor centre and climbs up through shaded pine forest before reaching a tunnel. Up to that tunnel, it’s manageable for many people, including casual walkers. Beyond it, things get rockier, steeper and a little exposed. You’ll need good shoes and a mind for heights.
A few important bits: you must book a free permit in advance (especially in high season) because access is limited to protect nature. The full round trip takes around 2-3 hours. Summit views are unforgettable, you’ll see sweeping beaches, Calpe below and on a clear day all the way to neighbouring towns and the open sea. It’s one of the most iconic walks/hikes in the Costa Blanca and gives you a sense of the region’s dramatic beauty.
