This quiet little spot hidden within the Zenkoji Temple grounds is a true hidden gem. You won’t find any signs in English, and it feels like they’re deliberately staying under the radar—but the staff are always warm and welcoming when someone walks in.

The atmosphere is extremely calm and quiet, so it’s best to keep your voice low to not disturb others—it’s one of those places that feels extra special because of how peaceful it is.

They offer a Temple Meal set that includes a variety of small, delicate dishes like steamed vegetables, tofu, pickles, rice porridge, and dessert (mine came with a light almond milk tofu). They also have a variety of drink sets, each served with a small dessert—perfect if you’re just stopping by for a quick break.

There’s also a lovely touch when you order the Temple Meal: you’ll be offered a selection of chopsticks with handwritten wishes. You can choose one to use with your meal or purchase them separately as a souvenir. A small display next to them explains the meaning of each writing—but everything is in Japanese, so Google Translate is your best friend here. That said, all of the messages are positive, so no need to overthink it.

Important: Be sure to remove your shoes when you enter the building.

To find the café: After entering the Zenkoji grounds through the southern gate (google maps), turn left and walk straight. You'll see one of the temple buildings ahead—look to the LEFT of its entrance. Tucked quietly in the corner, you’ll spot sliding doors - that’s the café. It’s easy to miss, which somehow makes it even more special.
*Don't try to follow its google maps pin, for some reason it is wrong (at least at the time when this guide came out). Here is the 📍 correct LOCATION (google maps).

IMPORTANT Note: The café has a very irregular opening schedule. Their weekly days off change from month to month, and even week to week. Your best bet is to check the Daikanjin Temple website news/announcements tab and look for an article titled something like “Temple Cafe Business Calendar for [month]” once the page is translated into English. I have attached a screenshot of how their schedule looked like for May and June in 2025.

Note: Please keep in mind that automatic translations can sometimes be inaccurate, so always double-check anything that might be important—especially if you have food allergies or dietary restrictions.
