Raigō-in is a Tendai sect Buddhist temple (founded in 1109) that practices shōmyō, a type of musical worship, and features a main hall with three beautiful statues, as well as a painted ceiling featuring Buddhist angels (something I've never seen anywhere else) - if you've been following my IG page, you know that I usually try not to bore you with those historical quirks but this one was pretty amazing. You could see that everything is super old (in a cool way), and the whole experience feels very authentic. Oh, and for some reason, nobody goes to this temple, so it feels very tranquil (once more I was totally alone during my visit).

Another cool thing is that every Sunday (13:00), Raigō-in holds a shōmyō service that visitors (locals and foreigners as well) can attend - a unique opportunity to experience an ancient Buddhist tradition. All visitors gather in the main hall, sit on a tatami floor around the Monk who will be chanting/singing sutra (shōmyō) and giving some explanation about it. The whole experience is in Japanese but it is cool nonetheless even if you don't understand a word. It lasts for about 20 minutes, and you don't have to pay anything (except the entrance fee). I would not plan the whole trip to Ohara just because of this experience, but if you will be there on Sunday, then it is definitely a cool option.
