Located beside the Sanmon Gate, Daikanjin is one of the two major sub-temples of Zenkoji.
Tucked inside its quiet grounds is one of my favorite museums in Nagano—a treasure hall that feels like a hidden time capsule. What makes it so special isn't just the collection (though it’s impressive), but the fact that the museum is inside the actual temple buildings, giving it a calm, old-school atmosphere you rarely find elsewhere.
The collection includes over 3,300 historical artifacts related to Zenkoji, with about 150 items on display at any time, rotated regularly. If you come on a weekday, chances are high you’ll have the place entirely to yourself.
As you walk through, you’ll also pass by an Imperial Residence used during visits from members of the Imperial Family, dating back over 200 years. The rooms and teahouse nearby still carry traces of those historical moments, including handwritten plaques and preserved interiors—but it’s all presented in a very understated, quiet way that fits the peaceful mood of the space.
*I’ve marked the entrance to the treasure hall in the last photo and here’s the google maps link just in case.
