Matsumoto Castle is hands-down my favorite castle in Japan—and not just because it looks like something out of a samurai movie. Its striking black exterior sets it apart from the more common white castles, giving it a unique and intricate appearance. Being slightly smaller than some of its counterparts, it feels more detailed and approachable.
Now, about that nickname—people often call it the “Crow Castle” because of its black exterior, though the official Matsumoto Castle website doesn’t really use that name. Interestingly, this clarification appears only on the Japanese version of their site. So, if you ever hear someone drop the "Crow Castle" nickname, you can casually mention that tidbit—just don't be that person who insists on it at parties 😄
One of the reasons I adore this castle is that you can actually go inside. Unlike many other castles that have been reconstructed, Matsumoto Castle retains its original wooden interiors. As you ascend the steep staircases (some of which are extremely steep—please be careful), you'll find displays of samurai armor, weaponry, and other historical artifacts. These exhibits provide a tangible connection to the past and offer a glimpse into the lives of those who once defended these walls.
