If you’re looking for a cozy, down-to-earth place to eat in Matsumoto, Shizuka is a perfect spot. It’s a traditional Japanese izakaya — the kind of place where you instantly feel comfortable, whether you’re coming in for a meal or just a drink.
One of my favorite places in Matsumoto, mostly because their food is so comforting.
I especially love their Oden Teishoku (oden set meal) — it’s simple, warm, and somehow exactly what you want after a long day.

When you walk in, they’ll let you know that your bill will include a small appetizer charge.
It’s a common thing in Japanese izakayas — called "otoshi" — and usually costs around 400 yen (about $3).
You’ll get a small snack that pairs well with drinks — something like pickles, a little salad, or simmered veggies.
