The Tararua Range section of Te Araroa is suggesting to take between 3-6 days of rough hiking through forest and alpine terrain with many steep ascents and decents.

Beginning at 150m above sea level and reaching 1,462m it’s sure to get the legs burning but also offer some fantastic views in clear weather!

The range is notorious for rough muddy terrain and wild weather that can deteriorate quickly. This is an alpine environment with potential freezing conditions year round meaning hikers need to be comfortable with backcountry hiking and prepared for the worst of conditions. Many rescues have been undertaken in the range - check the weather before you head out!
