The Richmond Alpine Track is absolutely stunning and has to be right up there with my favourite sections of the TA. That said, it is also a very rugged part of the trail, unformed in many places with stream crossings and steep exposed sections on summits consistently above 1,500m.

When walked in conjunction with the Pelorus River Track (after Havelock, before Richmond) it is recommended to be prepared to take 9 days worth of supplies making this section the longest food carry of the whole TA trail.

This is a fantastic section with great alpine mountain huts and even better views but it is NOT one to be taken lightly, particularly by those just starting their Te Araroa journey in the South Island who haven’t yet had the time to build up their trail fitness. Rescues frequently happen in this area, use caution and pick the best weather window where possible.
