Another fantastic side trip I did off the Te Araroa Trail was hitchhiking from the Whanganui township up to New Plymouth for incredible views of Mount Taranaki.
New Plymouth is a charming coastal city located on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island. Known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant arts scene, and laid-back atmosphere, it offers a mix of outdoor adventures and cultural experiences making it a wonderful side trip to experience the west coast. Whether you're into surfing, hiking, or checking out local galleries and cafes, New Plymouth has something for everyone to enjoy.
From here I would recommend:
Oakura Beach:
Visit and stay at the charming little Oakura Beach Caravan Park. Camping is available right on the beachfront as well surfing and walking along the beautiful black sand. Stop in for dinner at Black Sand Pizzaria and Bistro for dinner by the ocean.
Cape Egmont Lighthouse:
A historical landmark by the coast with beautiful views of snow capped Mount Taranaki looking inland.
Yarrows Bakery:
A 1923 established bakery located in the small South Taranaki town of Manaia serving delicious fresh breads, cakes and biscuits.
