If you have the time after reaching Taumarunui and want to really explore inland North Island New Zealand I would recommend taking a side trip east to sightsee and swim at beautiful Lake Taupo.
Taupo is quite a significant detour from Taumarunui (approximately 100km) but I think is really worthwhile. I hitchhiked here and back with a friend quite easily and found the New Zealand State Highway 1 (following the southern side of the lake) much easier and more direct than the Western Bay Road (following the northern side of the lake) which we returned on.
In Taupo I’d recommend camping at Taupo Top 10 Holiday Park for a budget friendly option with good proximity to the centre of town. Then checking out the following activities:
Huka Falls:
Witness the power of the Waikato River as it plunges over the falls.
Lake Taupō:
Enjoy swimming, water sports like kayaking and paddle boarding, or simply relax on the beaches.
Maori Rock Carvings:
Take a scenic cruise to view the impressive Maori rock carvings at Mine Bay.
Thermal Pools:
Relax and rejuvenate in natural hot pools, such as Otumuheke Stream or Wairakei Terraces.
