The Timber Trail is an 85km mountain biking and hiking trail located in the Pureora Forest Park in New Zealand's central North Island. It is a part of the TA trail and known for its stunning scenery, including ancient podocarp forests, historic logging tramways, and large suspension bridges. The trail is typically ridden over two days, with an overnight stay in Piropiro, near the halfway point.
I would highly recommend hiring a mountain bike for this section however it is possible to walk the Timber Trail if you choose, just keep in mind that it is a shared trail and you will spend your day dodging bikes as you walk.
For TA hikers Epic Cycle Adventures offer bike hire, bag transfer and camping at Camp Epic for about $180 or or just bike hire and bag transfer for about $130. I opted for the second option, camping at the nearby DOC campground at Piropiro (including in the trail pass) but both options were quite popular amongst hikers.
