If you’re like me and want to explore as much of the greater New Zealand area as possible during your hike then I’d highly recommend a side trip off the trail to visit the Poor Knight Islands - an iconic diving and snorkelling spot with caves, arches and islands.
From the trail you will need to make a detour to Tutukaka (a coastal town accessible by walking from the trail) then take a boat 23km out to the islands. The area is home to diverse marine life and the worlds largest sea cave - a must see if you ask me!
I booked with Dive Tutukaka and stayed at Tutukaka Holiday Park before returning to the trail. If possible I’d recommend booking your boat at least a few days in advance to guarantee availability but may be possible to book once you reach town.
(Note: this is a side trip and NOT on the Te Araroa trail)
