Aguage Waterfall (Santana)
Remote north-coast cascade hidden in the valleys of Santana
The Aguage Waterfall is one of Madeira’s lesser-known gems — a quiet cascade tucked away in the green valleys just outside Santana. Unlike famous waterfalls like Caldeirão Verde or 25 Fontes, Aguage feels untouched: no big signs, no tour buses, just a trickling veil of water surrounded by moss and Laurissilva forest.
The short trail to reach it follows small irrigation channels and farm paths, passing terraced fields before diving into dense greenery. The sound of the waterfall grows as you approach, and at the base you’ll find a shallow pool perfect for cooling your feet after the hike.
Why it’s special
Hidden local secret — barely marked on maps, rarely visited by tourists.
Peaceful setting — surrounded by ferns, moss, and Laurissilva trees.
Easy to combine — close to Santana’s thatched houses and nearby viewpoints.
Insider tips
