Towering hidden waterfall deep in Madeira’s Laurissilva forest
Cascata Água d’Alto is one of Madeira’s most impressive vertical waterfalls, plunging down a sheer basalt cliff into a moss‑lined amphitheater of Laurissilva forest. Located in the rugged mountains above Faial on the north coast, it remains a quiet gem — most tourists miss it, focusing instead on the nearby Balcões viewpoint or Pico Ruivo hikes.
The waterfall is reached via a short but adventurous trail that follows old levada channels through thick forest. In spring and after rains, the flow is powerful; in summer, it becomes more delicate, creating ethereal mist and rainbows in the sunlight.
Why it’s special
Vertical drop: One of the tallest free‑fall waterfalls easily reachable on Madeira.
Quiet location: Hidden away in Faial’s interior, rarely busy even in peak season.
Photographer’s dream: Mossy walls, soft light, and perfect framing from the trail.
Insider tips
Best visited after rainfall (late winter to spring) for maximum water flow.
Bring sturdy shoes — path can be slippery from constant spray and moss.
There’s no infrastructure — pack water and snacks.
