Pico Ruivo is the highest point on Madeira – 1862 meters above sea level – but the best part? It’s surprisingly accessible.
If you start from Achada do Teixeira (PR 1.3), it’s a short and relatively easy hike of about 2.8 km (one way). And the reward is massive: you’ll be standing on top of the island, with views stretching from the north to the south coast, and on clear days even to Porto Santo.
I personally love coming up here for sunset. There’s something magical about watching the light disappear behind the silhouette of Paul da Serra, with Pico do Arieiro in the distance while the valleys fall into shadow. Fewer people, more calm. Bring a blanket and some snacks – it’s the perfect picnic spot above the clouds.
There’s also a small mountain hut (Casa de Abrigo do Pico Ruivo) just before the summit, where you can rest, use the restroom, and warm up if it gets chilly.
This is one of my favorite “easy epic” experiences on Madeira – great for nearly all fitness levels, and always unforgettable.
