Cristo Rei (Garajau)

Clifftop Christ statue with panoramic ocean views

Cristo Rei de Garajau is Madeira’s answer to Rio – a smaller Christ statue perched on a dramatic clifftop overlooking the Atlantic. It’s a peaceful spot for sunrise or sunset, with stairs leading down to a secluded viewpoint.

I come here on quiet evenings – the ocean breeze, the golden light, the total calm make it feel far from Funchal despite being only 15 minutes away.

Insider tip

  • Combine with Garajau beach below (accessed by cable car).

  • Best light: sunset, when the cliffs turn orange and the ocean glows

For those who want more context
This statue was built in 1927, predating the famous Cristo Redentor in Brazil by a few years. It marks the boundary where non-Catholics were historically buried during the colonial era.
