Praia de Seixal (North Coast Black Sand Beach)
Madeira’s most iconic black-sand beach framed by green cliffs
Praia de Seixal is the kind of place that stops you in your tracks. A rare natural black-sand beach on Madeira’s rugged north coast, it’s framed by towering jungle-like cliffs and the ever-present roar of the Atlantic. This contrast of emerald mountains and volcanic sand is why so many call it “Madeira’s Hawaii.”
Unlike the pebble beaches elsewhere on the island, Seixal’s sand is soft, making it one of the best places for swimming and barefoot walks. The backdrop of waterfalls, banana terraces, and misty peaks makes it one of the most photogenic spots on the island — no wonder it’s gone viral on Instagram.
Why it’s special
Natural volcanic black sand — rare on Madeira.
Epic scenery — cliffs, waterfalls, and ocean all in one frame.
Safe swimming (in calmer conditions) — gradual entry, perfect for families.
