Vereda do Larano (Machico – Porto da Cruz)
Madeira’s coastal hike: wild cliffs, ocean views and local vibes.
This trail is a true favorite – raw Atlantic cliffs, old farmers’ paths carved into the hillside, and beautiful views ...
Starting in Machico, you climb up to the Boca do Risco viewpoint (the halfway point) and then follow the cliffside Vereda do Larano to Porto da Cruz. The whole way, the ocean is crashing below you and the horizon stretches forever.
The first time I hiked here in 2017, I couldn’t believe how quiet it was. We saw zero hikers, just fishermen in the distance. Now I take groups here after work, but when you go early or late, there will be only a few people. Any time is worth it though... – i love finishing the hike right in Porto da Cruz, grabbing lapas (grilled limpets)and poncha by the beach as a reward.
Insider tip
Start early in Machico – most hikers do it the other way, so you’ll have the cliffs almost to yourself.
At the finish in Porto da Cruz, you can usually grab a taxi right by the beach, or just pop into a café and they’ll call one for you.
Best after-hike snack: passionfruit poncha + lapas at A Pipa or a slice of bolo do caco with garlic butter at the surf café.
Bring water and sun protection – the trail is exposed and there are no services en route.
Distance ~ 10 km one way
Difficulty Moderate (narrow paths, some exposure)
Start point Snack Bar Levada Nova
