Miradouro Pico da Murta (Serra de Água, Ribeira Brava Valley)

Panoramic, peaceful viewpoint above the forests and sea – very few visitors.

This hidden hilltop plateau viewpoint overlooks the entire Ribeira Brava valley, coastal terraces, and rugged peaks—often referred to casually as “Madeira’s Matterhorn.” It’s easy to reach by car, with just a short walk from a roadside lookout in Serra de Água (near Campanário).

Insider tip

  • Best visited mid-morning for clear light and minimal haze.

  • Perfect as a photo stop on the drive to São Vicente or on the way to Boca da Encumeada.

  • No facilities—come prepared with water and snacks.

For those who want more context
Miradouro Pico da Murta is rarely included in standard Madeira itineraries—but that’s the beauty of it. Local photographers rave about its layered textures and remote feel. From here you’ll spot destinations like Pico Grande, the hamlets of Eira do Mourão and Fajã Escura, and the church of Serra de Água. It’s quiet, cinematic, and often completely empty
