Pico Grande (Central Mountains)
Rugged summit hike with insane 360° mountain and sea views
Pico Grande is one of my favorite mountain hikes on Madeira – steep, wild, and far less crowded than Pico Ruivo or Areeiro. From the summit you see everything: Ruivo, Areeiro, Paul da Serra plateau, and even the ocean on both sides of the island. It’s challenging but so worth it.
I often recommend this to guests who’ve already done PR1 and want something wilder. Start from Boca da Corrida or Curral das Freiras (Restaurante O Lagar Antiguades) – both approaches have jaw-dropping ridge views
Insider tip
Sunrise or sunset up here is next-level (but bring a headlamp for the descent). Or - in the dark - take a local guide!
Best combined with Boca da Corrida viewpoint for epic photos.
Bring snacks and layers – no facilities, lots of wind.
For those who want more context
Pico Grande sits at 1,654 m and is often used as a training peak for trail runners. The approach via Encumeada connects with parts of the old Royal Path, once used by locals to cross the island before roads existed. As this is often closed, use the 2 suggestions above: Nuns Valley and Boca da Corrida, to start your hike.
