Ruínas de São Jorge (Abandoned Lime Factory)

Hidden on Madeira’s wild north coast lies one of the island’s most atmospheric ruins – the abandoned lime factory of São Jorge. Built right on the cliffs above the Atlantic, this crumbling complex of stone walls, chimneys and staircases feels like something out of a movie set.

Most people drive past without even knowing it’s there – but wander inside (carefully!) and you’ll find sweeping ocean views framed by ivy‑covered windows, rusting machinery, and waves crashing below. It’s one of my favorite spots for photography – raw, quiet, and totally different from the polished tourist sights.

Why it’s special

  • Unique vibe: Industrial ruins meeting wild Atlantic cliffs.

  • Photographer’s dream: Arches, ivy, and dramatic sea backdrops.

  • Off the beaten path: Few visitors; peaceful despite being right off the road.

How to get there

  • Located just outside São Jorge village on the north coast, along ER101. https://share.google/l5cM4Qo4EcinEgFSa

  • Small parking layby nearby; short walk down to the ruins.

  • Combine with nearby Miradouro do Guindaste or Praia do Calhau de São Jorge for a full north-coast loop.

Insider Tips

  • Visit at sunrise or late afternoon for soft light and fewer cars passing above.

  • Wear sturdy shoes – uneven floors, loose stones, and rusted metal everywhere.

  • Don’t climb unstable structures – parts of the ruin are fragile.

  • Great picnic or photo stop en route between Santana and Boaventura.

For those who want more context…

"This lime factory was once part of Madeira’s early industry – processing limestone brought in by sea and used for construction across the island. After closing in the mid‑20th century, it’s been left to the elements – wind, salt, and vines slowly reclaiming the site. It’s one of the few places where you can feel Madeira’s industrial past against its wild natural backdrop."
