iradouro do Calhau da Furna do Bode (North Coast)
Hidden viewpoint with raw ocean energy and basalt cliffs
This is a true off-the-beaten-path viewpoint – no big signs, no crowds, just you, the ocean, and black volcanic rock formations. It’s perfect for travelers who love the wilder side of Madeira’s north coast.
I stumbled on this place while scouting alternative coastal routes – ended up staying an hour just watching waves crash into the cliffs.
Insider tip
Best after storms – the waves are insane.
No facilities – bring water and watch your footing on wet rocks.
Combine with a hike to Porto da Cruz. Just always follow along the cliffs. Maps.me can help too.
For those who want more context
“Calhau da Furna do Bode” refers to the rocky beach (“calhau”) and the goat cave (“furna do bode”) nearby – a nod to the area’s past when goats grazed on these coastal terraces.
This can also be added to my North Coast Tour – details here.
It's a great spot to take in the beauty of the island and snap some amazing photos. It can also be a beautiful Sunrise Spot.
Another option is to start a hike from there, just follow the coast line all the time to Porto da Cruz (11 km hike) and take back a local taxi: +351 965 773 040 (Taxi Machico, he knows me)
