PR9 – Levada do Caldeirão Verde (Queimadas – Caldeirão Verde)
Madeira’s iconic waterfall levada – tunnels, mossy cliffs and pure Laurissilva magic.
If you want the ultimate levada experience, this is it. PR9 takes you deep into the Laurissilva forest, following a narrow water channel carved into the cliffs, crossing four tunnels and passing moss-draped walls until you reach the Caldeirão Verde – a huge 100-meter waterfall plunging into a turquoise pool.
The first time I brought Homeoffice Madeira guests here, someone literally said, “This is like hiking in Jurassic Park.” And they’re right – ferns taller than you, dripping moss, and that constant sound of water trickling beside you. Even after dozens of times, it still feels otherworldly.
Insider tip
Bring a flashlight – the tunnels are long, wet, and low-ceilinged. BE VERY CAREFUL WITH YOUR HEAD IN THE TUNNELS!
Go early morning to beat the crowds at the lagoon.
If you’re up for more, extend to Caldeirão do Inferno – even bigger cliffs and fewer people (extra 5 km). Closed at the moment though.
Wear sturdy shoes – levada edges can be slippery.
Distance 13 km return (to Verde) – 17 km if extended to Inferno
Difficulty Moderate (flat but exposed and narrow)
Start point Parque das Queimadas (Santana)
