THE WALK:
The Câmara de Lobos Promenade is a 2.2-km-long pedestrian walkway that offers a scenic route along the sea, connecting the Lido to the picturesque Câmara de Lobos bay. Visitors can enjoy views of the characteristic fishing boats and recently redeveloped gardens along the way. Built on pillars to minimize environmental impact, this promenade allows you to experience the natural beauty of the cliffs while taking a leisurely stroll by the water.
Start: Doca dos Cavacas, go through the tunnel and walk along the whole promenade. (around 3.5 km from there to Câmara De Lobos, easy to follow)
Promenade de Câmara de Lobos (South Coast)
Colorful fishing village vibes on a seaside promenade
Câmara de Lobos’ seaside promenade is pure Madeira charm – fishing boats bobbing in the bay, pastel houses on the cliffs, and locals sipping poncha by the water. This is where Winston Churchill painted in the 1950s, and it still feels timeless today.
I love walking here at sunset – grab lapas (grilled limpets) and a drink, watch the fishermen mend their nets, and soak in the south coast atmosphere.
Insider tip
Best poncha bar: Filhos d’Mar – strong and authentic.
Combine with Cabo Girão skywalk (10 min drive) for sunset views.
Come late afternoon for the best mix of light and local vibe.
For those who want more context
Câmara de Lobos means “Chamber of Wolves,” named by Portuguese explorers who mistook local monk seals for wolves. It’s still one of Madeira’s most traditional fishing harbors and a must-stop on any south coast trip.
I love to walk there in the evening. There are not many people, but a beautiful sunset.
