Ponta do Pargo is the westernmost point of Madeira – a flat plateau ending abruptly in 300 m cliffs. The tiny white lighthouse sits right on the edge, with unobstructed views of the sun sinking into the Atlantic.

I love coming here with a picnic — no tour buses, no fences, just endless ocean and sky.

• Sunset is the main event; arrive 30 min early to grab the best spot.

• Combine with Paul do Mar or Achadas da Cruz for a full west coast loop.
