Hike: Pico do Facho (Machico)
Short hike with sweeping views over Madeira’s oldest town and the east coast
Pico do Facho towers above Machico, the historic bay where the first Portuguese settlers landed in 1419. At 322 meters, this modest peak doesn’t compete with Ruivo or Areeiro in height, but its vantage point is unbeatable: 360° views over Machico Bay, Caniçal, Ponta de São Lourenço, and the Desertas Islands on a clear day.
The trail is short, family-friendly, and perfect for sunrise or sunset — yet remarkably uncrowded compared to the island’s higher peaks. It’s an excellent warm-up hike for travelers just arriving on the island, as it’s only 10 minutes from the airport.
Why it’s special
Historical significance — overlooks the bay where Madeira’s discovery began.
Unbeatable east coast views — Machico, Caniçal, Ponta de São Lourenço.
Quick & accessible — easy hike doable in 1–2 hours round trip.
Perfect first-day adventure — near airport and average elevation gain.

Insider tips
Go for sunrise: the first rays light up Machico Bay beautifully and you’ll have the summit to yourself.
Bring water and sun protection — minimal shade on the ridge.
Combine with a swim at Praia de Machico or Canical beach (golden sand beach) afterward.
Excellent spot for plane-spotting — Machico’s bay is under the flight path to FNC airport.
