Miradouro da Ponta do Rosto (Ponta de São Lourenço)
Epic viewpoint over Madeira’s wild east coast peninsula
Ponta do Rosto is the classic photo stop at São Lourenço – rugged cliffs, volcanic colors, and endless Atlantic on both sides. It’s the easiest way to experience the vibe of Madeira’s east peninsula without hiking the full PR8 trail.
I like coming here early in the morning – the light is perfect, the wind is calmer, and you often get it all to yourself before tour buses arrive.
Insider tip
Combine with the full PR8 hike if you have time.
Crazy winds – secure hats and cameras.
Great stop on an east coast drive to Porto da Cruz or Santana.
For those who want more context
Ponta do Rosto is one of the few spots where you can see both the north and south coasts of Madeira at once. The volcanic peninsula here is a protected nature reserve, famous for its rare flora and seabird colonies.
Whether you're chasing sunrise views or looking for a quick coastal adventure, this - unfortunately sometimes a bit crowded - space is worth adding to your Madeira itinerary. Best to go there after 16.00 to avoid traffic chaos.
