Lombo do Mouro (Encumeada Plateau)
High-mountain pass linking Madeira’s wild interior — gateway to legendary hikes
Lombo do Mouro is one of the most breathtaking mountain passes on Madeira, perched high above the Laurissilva valleys between Paul da Serra and Encumeada. At around 1,200 meters altitude, this ridge feels like standing on the spine of the island: ocean views in both directions, sweeping valleys dropping away beneath you, and the ever-changing drama of mountain weather rolling across the plateau.
It’s more than just a viewpoint — Lombo do Mouro is the trailhead for some of Madeira’s most adventurous hikes, especially the Caminho do Pináculo e Folhadal (PR17). This 15 km trail crosses ancient laurel forests, stone-paved mule tracks, and levada paths, offering one of the richest combinations of views and ecosystems anywhere on the island.
