The toboggan ride from Monte is one of Madeira’s quirkiest traditions: two men in white uniforms and straw hats push and steer a wicker sled down 2 km of steep asphalt. It’s part thrill ride, part cultural throwback – you’ll laugh the whole way.

I love watching first-timers scream with joy (and mild terror) as they realize there are no brakes – just skill and tradition guiding the sled.
