Porto Moniz & its Natural Pools

Porto Moniz is one of Madeira’s most famous spots – volcanic rock pools right on the edge of the Atlantic, perfect for swimming and family-friendly. But here’s the truth: during the day it can get absolutely packed with tour buses and day-trippers, especially in summer. If you’re looking for a quiet swim, you might be disappointed.

The pools themselves are stunning – black lava formations with crystal-clear seawater constantly refreshed by the waves – but if you want a calmer vibe, I’d point you toward the Seixal Natural Pools just 15 minutes away. Same wild volcanic feel, but way less crowded.

That said, Porto Moniz at sunset is incredible. Most crowds are gone, the light is golden on the cliffs, and you can sit by the ocean wall with a poncha or a cold Coral beer and watch the waves crash below you. It’s one of my favorite end-of-day stops on a north coast road trip."*

Why it’s special

  • Iconic natural swimming pools carved by lava flows.

  • Dramatic location at the far northwest tip of Madeira.

  • Perfect sunset vibe when the crowds leave.

Insider Tips

  • Skip midday (11am–3pm) when tour buses arrive.

  • Visit for sunrise or sunset – magical light, almost no people.

  • Bring reef shoes if you plan to explore outside the main lido area.

  • Combine with Seixal beach and pools for a more relaxed swimming day.

How to get there

  • Located in Porto Moniz village, northwest Madeira.

  • Easy to combine with a north coast road trip (Seixal, Veu da Noiva, Ribeira da Janela).

  • Paid parking available; cafés and restaurants along the waterfront.

For those who want more context…

"Porto Moniz was once a remote fishing village, famous for whaling in the 19th century. The pools were naturally formed by volcanic lava flows and later adapted into a semi-protected lido. While it’s now a major tourist stop, locals still come here early mornings or evenings to swim, fish, or simply watch the waves smash into the black cliffs."
