The river runs from Bælisfljót under a hill on the west side, where salmon are often found. After that the river branches in and around gravel banks and spreads all over. One branch has stood out in the last few years. It runs along the east bank, and in it, just above Skarðshamrar farm, is Steinastrengur. A stiff riffle under a gravely bank. An occasional stop for the salmon on its way up the river.
