Sombrio Beach is one of those spots on Vancouver Island that feels like a hidden paradise—if you time your visit right. Just a short hike from the parking lot, the beach is home to a stunning waterfall tucked inside an emerald-green canyon, only steps from the shoreline. It’s a fantastic place to explore, though graffiti on the canyon walls has taken away some of its charm. If you don't mind a bit of digital trickery, a little post-processing magic might be needed to bring back the natural feel. A tripod is a must, and a rain cover is also a good idea, especially if you want to capture the misty atmosphere.

Sombrio is one of the most popular beaches along the Juan de Fuca Trail, especially with surfers, so if you’re looking for solitude, it’s best to avoid summer weekends. If you’re up for more adventure, a second waterfall sits within a small bay about 1 km south along the Juan de Fuca Trail. The path can be rough and muddy in the spring, but the falls are worth the effort. Wildlife is also part of the experience, so watch for bears and other coastal critters. Whether you’re here to camp, hike, or take in the raw beauty of the coast, Sombrio Beach is always worth the trip.
